All pruning cuts should be made to a side branch or to side buds so the flow of the branch is maintained. The cuts should be made just outside the line of the 'bark branch ridge' and 'branch collar' of the branch to be retained. This is important so the tree can occlude (close/seal off) the wound that has been made.
